Summer Vacation Part 2

After a wonderful week in Puglia, we headed to the opposite, Northwest corner of Italy for the second week of our trip.   I chose Mont Blanc as it was an area I have always heard about as being beautiful and  well set up for trekkers and hut-to-hut hiking.   I planned our itinerary based off one I found online, and found a company to courier our suitcases from hotel to hotel.

We flew from Bari to Milan and rented a car in Milan and drove the 3 hours to Courmayer, Italy where we began our trek.   Courmayer was a delightful mountain town.  The following morning we hopped on a bus to the place where we planned to begin the trail.

The first mile we did, to Rifugio Bonatti, was very steep and made us wonder what we had gotten ourselves into.   After we got up to the Refugio, the trail flattened out and was beautiful.

Unfortunately, the trail then went back down, which meant we soon had to go back up--this time to Refugio Elena, where we ate lunch

The, further up.... to the summit of the Grand Col Ferrett at 8323 feet.  The view from the top was beautiful--and it was also quite cold and windy--what a change from the beaches in Puglia!   We even pulled out hats and gloves!

The remainder of the day was a gentle downslope into Switzerland, where were introduced to Swiss prices at the Refugio Alp de Peule ($20 for 4 cokes).  We ended in the town of Ferrett, where we waited for a bus to take us to our hotel for the night in Lac Champex.  We were exhausted by the time we arrived, having hiked 12.88 miles and gained 4245 feet in elevation.  The hotel restaurant was expensive and so we bought the kids dinner from the grocery store and then put them to bed before eating ourselves and crawling into bed with sore legs and feet!

Our next day was grey and a bit misty, but we pulled out our rain gear and hit the trail a little after 8.   We met a group of women from Maryland who were doing the same route as us the day before, so we started off walking with them in the morning.   We had two route choices, one that was 4000 foot elevation gain and 10 miles or the more gentle choice with only 2700 feet elevation gain, though still 10 miles.   Considering the weather and our exhaustion we opted for the easier route, which took us on a ridge over looking the Swiss valley of Martigny.   Our lunch stop was the beautiful  Refugio Bovine--a working cow farm with some of the most beautiful looking cows we have ever seen.  We enjoyed a delicious tart from their kitchen and continued on to the town of Trient, our stopping point for the night.    Unfortunately, all hotels had been booked in that town (we booked late) and so we stayed a few miles down the road in Chatelard.   Because it was Sunday, they bus was not running, so the inn owner came to pick us up in her car (what service!).   Though the hotel was nothing special, the service was amazing, and after a long day in the cold drizzle, a warm shower was a real treat! Totals: 10.34 miles, 2730 elevation gain

The following morning we caught the bus back to Trient and began hiking again.   This time, we had two summits, first the Cold de Balm, a beautiful refugio where we had lunch and had our first view of Mt. Blanc, and then the Aiguilette de Posettes.

At the Refugio we crossed into France, and were greeted with an amazing view over the Chamonix valley.   Ski lifts dotted the trail the rest of the time, and more people were hiking as well, having taken day hikes up from Chamonix.

Our descent was long and steep into Argentiere, where we spent the night.   It was nice to have French prices and we enjoyed a delicicious dinner before falling asleep. Totals: 9.87 miles, 3619 feet elevation gain.

Our final hiking day was from Argentiere to Chamonix, via Refugio Lac Blanc.   Our hike was short, but steeper, with an election gain of nearly 4000 feet.   This section of the trail was so steep that in some sections, ladders were bolted to rocks for hikers to climb up.   With my fear of heights, I did not like those sections too much, but they were fun for the kids.  At the top, Lac Blanc had fresh snow.   We had lunch at the Refugio there--Ethan claimed it was the best soup he has had in his life--and then we decided to treat ourselves with a gondola ride down to Chamonix to end our trek.  Totals: 6.27 miles, total elevation gain 3881 feet.

Chamonix was a very busy bustling city--the most people we had seen the entire trip, including Puglia, but very picturesque.   Because we took the gondola, we had the afternoon to explore and shop, which was a treat.   The city sits in the shadow of Mont Blanc, which makes it so beautiful.

The following day, we caught an 8am bus from Chamonix back to Courmayer--via a tunnel through Mt. Blanc!   On the bus we met some professional runners who were running the trail over 5 days.....amazing athletes!  We collected our car, did some shopping and headed to our last destination, a night in Piedmont at an agriturismo to relax.   On the way, we stopped for an Italian lunch at a beautiful restaurant that overlooked the city of Turin.  I am not sure if the view or the price was better--three courses and drinks for only 10 Euros per person!  Our agriturismo was great, and we enjoyed relaxing, and swimming, and one last Italian dinner.

We had time the next day, as our flight to Paris was at 9pm, so we headed into the hills of Piedmont to wine taste.   The area is famous for its Barbera wines.   We went to a great winery recommended by our hotel, and tried a few samples.

After we got lunch in a nearby town and then drove to Lake Maggiore--which is quite close to the Milan airport--to walk around and have some gelato before leaving Italy and checking into our airport hotel in Paris after midnight.   The following morning was time to fly home, sadly, but what an amazing trip!

Overall, the hiking was very hard--each day we were exhausted--but it was so beautiful--and really helped us feel like we were able to get away from it all.  I would love to do the whole route one day (not sure if my kids would though! 🤣)

Summer Vacation Part 1

At the beginning of the month, we took a much needed summer vacation for 2 weeks.   We headed to Italy, where we spent the first week exploring the beaches of Puglia, and the second week hiking park of the Tour de Mont Blanc.  It was a really wonderful trip that we all really enjoyed--lots of outdoor time, good food, family bonding :)

We flew into Rome on Saturday mid-day and rented a car.   Despite jet lag we drove about 4 hours to our home for the evening in a small town about an hour west of Naples.   We had a great pizza dinner and got some sleep.

The following day, we drove to our home base for the next week, Agriturismo Panacea in Cerfignano, at the very tip of the boot heel of Italy.  Along the way, we stopped at the beautiful worn of Pogliano a Mare and took our first dip in the Mediterranean--they water was amazing--clear and warm.

Our hotel was a very cool farm, with many fruit trees and vegetable gardens--and it served an amazing breakfast each morning filled with homemade cakes and treats.   We spent our days driving from beach to beach, and of course eating well.   It was (not surprisingly) very hot wheel we were there, so we didn't really do much town exploration, but luckily the ocean kept us cool!

Some of the beaches were more traditional beaches with soft sand and small waves, but the majority were very interesting coves created by stone.   The water was crystal clear and there were lots of places for the kids to jump off into the sea.

The food in Puglia was a little bit different than northern Italy--it is a historically very poor region of Italy--and there was very little meat on any restaurant menu, except horse!

The tomatoes, and mozzarella were divine, and the pasta was great too--orchiette is their specialty.   On our last day in Puglia, we spent the night in the city of Bari, where we got to watch it made by hand on the street!

I loved this region of Italy, and would go back in a heartbeat.   We didn't even have time to explore any of northern Puglia (except Bari), so will definitely plan to return one day!

Remembering Zachary Collie Moreno

Two weeks ago, Jason's brother Brandon's stepson Zach died suddenly in a plane crash.   He was only 20 years old, loved aviation and was training to be an airplane mechanic.  This weekend was the funeral.

He died at an airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, while riding in a 2-person plane.   Though not yet confirmed, it is suspected that the plane had sudden engine failure.  The plane crashed into the waters of Lake Winnebago.

Such a horrible tragedy and a life cut too short.  He will be missed by his friends and family, and we are so sad for Brandon and his wife Jennifer.

Les Mis

For my birthday,  Jason bought me tickets to see Les Miserables, as it is playing in SF for a few weeks this summer.   This is one of my all time favorite shows, so I was really excited to check it out.   Jason and I saw it together many years ago in Chicago--maybe 16 or 17 years ago?   That makes me feel old!

Anyhow, before the show we headed to one of our favorite SF restaurants, Zuni Cafe.   Pre-pandemic, it was virtually impossible to get a reservation there, but it wasn't so bad this time around.   The food was just as delicious as we had remembered.

The show was great, with especially good actors portraying Jean Valjean and Eponine.   Hopefully it won't be another 10 years before we see it again!

July 4

For the July 4th weekend, we headed to Tahoe.   What difference a week made--temps were in the 80s, and sunny.   Though the lake was still too cold to swim, the kids did dip their toes in!

On Saturday, we went for a hike out to Point Mariah and had a picnic lunch.  Later that evening, Jason's parents drove up.

Sunday marked the 4th of July parade--Alaina enjoyed decorating her bike and riding in it--and then we spent some time at the beach where Jason enjoyed the chili cook off.   Next year, Ethan claims he is going to enter the competition!

Unfortunately, Ethan and I had to head back on Sunday evening because I had to work on Monday and Ethan had her Berkely class (he is taking a public speaking course this year).  Jason stayed with his parents throughout Tuesday night.

Ethan and I were both off on July 4th though, so we took a short hike with my dad in Marin and BBQed in the evening.

A nice holiday!

College Reunion

Last weekend, 4 of my college girlfriends and I met at the cabin in Tahoe for a long weekend.   I haven't gotten together with them since before the pandemic, so it was great to reunite in person!

My friend Becca drove all the way from St. Louis (!), Aga flew from Minneapolis, and Valerie and Laura flew from Chicago.   It was a long trip for all of them, especially Aga whose flight was delayed overnight in Denver.

We had a great time together though.   On Saturday, we took a beautiful hike on the shores of Lake Tahoe called the rubicon trail, and enjoyed a picnic at Meeks Bay.

On Sunday, we walked around our neighborhood, and then headed to Donner Memorial State Park, before taking Aga to the airport in Reno.

After dropping her off, the rest of us took a sunset cruise on Lake Tahoe, which was beautiful though quite cold!

On Monday, Becca left and Valerie and Laura and I did some shopping in Truckee.   A strong rain storm hit mid-day, so we went for pedicures--and after it passed enjoyed a walk on the Truckee river.

Overall, a very nice time and so wonderful to catch up with this great group!

Graduation!

On Friday, we celebrated 2 graduations in our family.   Alaina "graduated" from her elementary school, and Ethan graduated from middle school.

Alaina's 4th grade promotion was a short morning ceremony.   The class sang a few songs and a few of the kids spoke about their favorite school memories.  We have been taking a kid to that elementary school for 9 years, so it will be a transition for us to no longer go there.   Middle school, here comes Alaina!

In the afternoon, Ethan had his 8th grade graduation, which had more of the usual pomp and circumstance.   The kids were individually recognized, and each received ribbons and a diploma.  Jeremy, Gary and Eileen came up from Southern California, and my dad and Marilynn were there as well.

Afterwards, we had a nice dinner at Perrys to celebrate the occasion, followed by cake at home.

My dad gave him a pretty cool graduation present--he framed his first check that he got from working at Kumon!

Then Ethan left to attend his 8th grade promotion party where he celebrated with his classmates.  Though we really have no idea what went on, he did come home with a cup full of candy and told us that basically he just ate and jumped around the whole time.

Anyhow, this is an interesting inflection point for Ethan--he is leaving all of his classmates to head to high school in the city.   By the end of his time at middle school, he definitely felt "done"--he has been frustrated by the lack of challenge and the social scene there.   I hope our switch next school year will be a better fit for him!
